In alignment with the theme of this Lunar Gala, "Liminal," this look represents the transformation, growth, and decay of a living being. The subject matter of ecology has been a constant source of design inspiration for me, and for years, I have been collecting images of tree bark while on my travels or simply walking to work. 

 

Using scrap fabric, ribbons, and thread from a creative reuse store in Portland, I emulated the texture of a redwood tree that I came across at an arboretum. Captivated by the rippling and peeling of the bark and the strands of wood that gently fly away, I sought to make the textile appear dynamic and weathered. I achieved this appearance through hand-sewing and shearing the edges of each strip of fabric.
